The National Library for Agricultural Information


The National Library for Agricultural Information is the only library in Jordan specialized agricultural literature. It was established in 1958, as part of the Scientific Research Department. When the National Center for Agricultural Research &Extension was established, in 1985, the library was upgraded to The National Library for Agricultural Information.
It houses a large collection of agricultural information resources.

Our Vision:

To enhance and improve the library collection, as well as, to stand for referential   library for agricultural information resources, at both the national and international levels.

Library Collection:

The library houses  a large agricultural resources ,including books ,journals .bulletins thesis,desertations , studies and research, surveys ,project reports,statistics,annual reports, audio-visual materials, booklets and brochures, all making 60.000materials.

Library Sections:

  • Reference Section: including 4.000 referencial materials (thesis, annual reports, encyclopedias, statistics and thesauruses).
  • English Section with 10.000 agricultural related books
  • Arabic Section with 4.000 agricultural related books.
  • Audio-visual materials section
  • Periodicals: including 7.000 volumes that cover over 500 journal titles
  • Brochures section: contains all NCARE publications of flyers booklets , brochures & posters.

Services:

  1. Current awareness of the new arrivals for the different sections of the library
  2. Free photocopies of journal articles or books
  3. Date base search: including Agricola data base .Plant Gene. Agris data base and CAP Abstracts data base.
  4. Computer search on the library collections using the WINISI as an   information storing and retrieving system.
  5. Free- of charge article requests through Aglinet services (Agricultural Library Net)
  6. Books Lending (NCARE staff members only).

Acquisition Strategy:

The library enhances its collections through three main approaches:

  • Purchasing: usually depends on the budget and any financial support.
  • Exchange Program, a prospective exchange partner should send a list and sample issues of publications that it offers. The library will select titles from this list; in turn the library provides its list of agricultural titles to the partner.
  • Gift program: where the library accepts selected materials as gifts from individuals, associations, corporations and other groups.

Activities:

  • The staff members are regularly enrolled in training courses on technical processes and information management in libraries
  • The library is a steering committee member in The National Agricultural   Information System project. (NAIS)
  • The library is an active partner in agricultural and heritage exhibitions organized by NCARE.


Parteners:

FAO,IPGRI ,ACSAD,ICARDA,The Arab Organization for  Agricultural  Development, ICRISAT, and others are considered a main support by enriching library collections with their up- to date  publications.

Jordan Documentation Center:

Jordan is partner in the Agricultural Information System Net work( AGRIS) The library  houses Jordan Documentation Center (Agris Center ) in which all Jordanian Agricultural literature is being documented .WebAgris is used as an application for the documenting process.
